There is something magical about milestones; nobody can ever take them away. No matter how improbable they might have been, once they have seen the light of day they are alive forever. Even if others have worked hard adding obstacles and barriers, once someone has passed a milestone there is nothing further that they can do that is relevant! Denials do not matter; we have the facts. Sarcasm cannot touch us; we know the truth. Comparisons are simply distractions; the context and relevance of a milestone is always personal. One knows. One has the experience. One has seen it firsthand.
In the age of always looking forward, it is important to appreciate the moments at hand. I would like to suggest the following. First, celebrate milestones as and when they happen! When something wonderful happens in a relationship, no matter how big or small, celebrate. When anyone achieves something important or difficult, take time to recognize, reflect, and honor the moment at hand.
Second, recognize that not everyone is going to be happy with a milestone. In one case, “many who could neither stand nor walk were healed that day. The evil spirits protested loudly as they were sent on their way.” (Acts 8.7) In another situation, the achievements were ignored in order to deal with the fears and uncertainties of what was unfolding. In your life and mine, others are jealous, some can only look at themselves, and there are those that need to wallow in despair. Whatever the reason might be, there are some that find it difficult or impossible to be happy for others.
Third, see a milestone for what it is. Nothing more, yet, at the same time, nothing less! If the Spirit was involved, revel in the experience of God touching your life. If you sacrificed to achieve, weigh the price paid. Let the fullness of the milestone etch itself on your soul.
Today will bring new milestones. It is an opportunity to engage in the process of living! God is willing to be a part of your life and mine.
