There is a theme pervading many mentor to student and coach to participant relationships. The mentor/coach sees something that the student and participant cannot. It often starts with potential! A swimming coach catches a glimpse of the potential in a boy that is eleven years old. A decade later, the young boy is now and man and the record books have been rewritten. A mentor sees the potential that a young employee cannot see within. A decade later, men emerge making a difference in the lives of their communities. In each case, the status quo was never the end. What one thought was good or great would simply be a footnote in a much greater story. The change begins when someone catches of glimpse of what might be.
This is not a new story. Even as I find myself energized and filled with hope by the latest revelation, I remember how “previous to Philip's arrival, a certain Simon had practiced magic in the city, posing as a famous man and dazzling all the Samaritans with his wizardry.” (Acts 8.9) Philip arrived, the new potential unfolded, and yesterday's amazement quickly became a distant memory.
As a new day dawns, I find myself looking at a future bounded and framed by yesterday's limitations. The boundaries are mine. I do not see anyone imposing them on me. The ends of my dreams exist in my mind. They will not be real unless I decide to give them a life of their own. I have my doubts, fears, and uncertainties. Yet, a small voice is whispering in my life and yours, “ there is much more to the stories”.
Divinity can see what we cannot see in our lives. You and I are priceless children of God. We have the potential to be and do much more than we are, regardless of what we have or have not achieved in the past. The measure of our greatness is found in how we respond to the potential infused in us by Divinity. Everything is possible. God's voice is here; “I see…”
