When something is good, especially when it is very good, it is natural for one to long that it last forever. You can pick any topic! Food, a great sunset, a special moment with a loved one, whenever life touches me in a special way, I want it to last forever. At times, I find myself trying to capture the moment in a photograph, but the best moments are always captured in one's mind. It is as if God gives each a special record button within the mind. It remains untouched most of the time. It is available on those occasions that the colors are perfect, the texture beyond description, or the sense of peace of God's presence overwhelming.
One gift that has come with time is the willingness to give life a thank-you and to let go of the moment. Candidly, I do not always do it willingly! I like holding on to everything. I am, like many others, inherently selfish. I want everything that makes me happy, filled with hope, and ecstatic to be present forever.
God set up life with a different premise. As good as the moment at hand is, there are even more great moments to come. Sunsets can be stunning, more than once. Great events are never exactly repeated, however each has more than one great moment in his or her life. There are moments in life that are, by design, singular in nature.
I found myself reminded of the call to walk an intentional life. You and I are here for a purpose that is greater than self. We are invited to be part of a great cause. We are charged as missionaries and ambassadors for compassion, love, and community.
In this reflection, I found myself recalling how “when they came up out of the water, the Spirit of God suddenly took Philip off, and that was the last the eunuch saw of him. But he didn't mind. He had what he'd come for and went on down the road as happy as he could be.” (Acts 8.38, 39)
