There are many things occurring in life with an absence of traditional logic. I am struck by the contradiction found in a Formula 1 race that will happen in a few days. What possible logic is there is blocking off a large area of the central business district for what is, at best, entertainment? Why should the small businesses in that area carry the load of lost business while others located on the fringes benefit? What possess men and women to risk their lives for the sake of a race that has no long-term consequences worthy of note? Is there any sense in spending millions of dollars, risking the health of participants and observers, and taking away from the normal productivity of thousands?
Yet, there is more to living than just working, being orderly, and following traditional logic. Life is about engaging in the potential of what might be. Life is found in pushing the edges of our abilities and dreaming of even more. Life is a journey we share, competing and yet supporting each other along the way.
Life also means that we will struggle with where the Spirit leads. It will not always be obvious. It can be risky, even life threatening! The safe, predictable, and easy path may not be the one with our calling.
The challenge of the choice in the moment is not new. In a time past, one man's reaction reflects my own to the choices today. “Master, you can't be serious. Everybody's talking about this man and the terrible things he's been doing, his reign of terror against your people in Jerusalem! And now he's shown up here with papers from the Chief Priest that give him license to do the same to us.” (Acts 9.13, 14) Yet, he was called then and we are called now.
In the day about to unfold, we are called to put it all on the line. We are invited to risk our lives for the cause of compassion and love. There is much at stake, even as others dismiss the goal.
