The commentator's banter at the F1 practice session went on for hours, literally! Because it was Singapore initial F1 race, there was a one-off extension of the first two practice sessions. Instead of the traditional twenty minutes, each was ninety. As I listened to Peter do the color commentary, I found myself caught in his words, images, and insight. He is passionate about the sport. He has been near pivotal F1moments, starting from the age of twelve. With his words, I was in his shoes, experiencing, learning, and remembering.
Peter has, for me, joined the short list of great communicators, visionaries, and those filled with prophetic insight (momentary or longer). Each takes me into the future while returning me to the present filled with a sense of wonder, admiration, and hope. I walked the track with Peter and the drivers the night before. I wondered aloud how the new experiences of driving under the lights, grabbling with a new circuit, and dealing with the high humidity were going to touch the sport beyond the weekend. I found myself sitting at the feet of a lighting expert in Italy, exploring the possibilities and in the end finding a great solution.
It was truly fantastic! Candidly, even though I am a racing enthusiast, I had no idea that two people could talk for over three and half hours and keep a crowd engaged. Perhaps the limits I put on the possibilities have controlled the possibilities in other areas of my life. As I left myself travel with Peter, I found myself opening up to the possibilities that others, even God, could take me into great unknowns.
When “Ananias went and found the house, placed his hands on blind Saul, and said, 'Brother Saul, the Master sent me, the same Jesus you saw on your way here,'” (Acts 9.17) he was opening up the unknown. Saul responded, big time! I found myself responding to Peter's words, seeing F1 in a new way. I can only imagine what it will be like to list and respond to the Spirit today.
