Conspiracy theorists describe elaborate plans, intricate schemes, and endless plotting by secret societies, unholy alliances, and agents of evil. While I would not attempt to minimize the characterization, I find that many actions are simply opportunistic. The opening was there and someone seized it! Candidly, when one evaluates recent history, there is little connection between strategic views, planning, and investments and action. Organizations invest in planning for the future with retreats, reams of paper, and endless discussions. In the end, very little of this matters. Whatever the crisis du jour is, it overwhelms the planning, foresight, and tactics.
There are those that believe God asks us to script our lives. On one level, I believe this is true, though not as I suspect you or I would anticipate. I do not believe Divinity has a prescribed journey that you or I must follow. I find no evidence that anyone man or woman of God has ever been called to this type of living. Rather, the models suggest something quite different! My experience reinforces this conclusion. God invites you and me into the ordinary events of life. We are called to respond to what life presents, to live fully and completely in the moment. The touch points with God and each other in our lives are found in the moment we have.
When I read that “he came across a man-his name was Aeneas-who had been in bed eight years paralyzed. [And] Peter said, 'Aeneas, Jesus Christ heals you. Get up and make your bed!' And he did it-jumped right out of bed.” (Acts 9.33, 34) I see the narrative as an example of God responding to the moment at hand. The only limits in Divinity response in our lives is the degree that you and I are willing to let our hands be God hand's, our eyes and heart be God heart, and our voice be a whisper of love.
Life comes with open opportunities. Many go unanswered due to our blindness. Today is an invitation to feel, be touched, and to respond with God.
