Singapore is full of unexpected answers to your favorite quest. When I first arrived, a friend told me of an incredible fountain pen store. It took months until he finally introduced me to his source! It seems that I was a friend, however, I was not to be trusted until he was able to purchase a very special pen. Once his mission was accomplished, I was given access to the source. Several pens later, I still treasure the find. However there is a bit of bad news – the source is no longer the source. Someone or something has emptied the store of all the treasures.
The good news is that I have found several other interested fountain pen sources. While note of them have the inventory, they are in their own right, special places of interest. I have come to appreciate that regardless of what one might think or imagine – anyone can have an appreciation for an old fountain pen. From a market in Bangkok to an old store in Malacca Malaysia and even to the odd collector in small stores around Singapore, you would be amazed at how many people continue to appreciate the joy of writing with a fountain pen.
In the process of taking a fresh perspective on my assumptions about fountain pens, I have found that God often speaks through individuals and circumstances that I never imagined. Candidly, this discovering recurs in every generation. Many where surprised when there was a man of God “named Cornelius who lived in Caesarea, captain of the Italian Guard stationed there.” (Acts 10.1) They were expecting a rough soldier that was only interested in power and dominance. What they found was something quite different. They discovered a man of God with an active prayer life and record of service for others.
I know that many are on quest of one kind or another today. To each I would offer the following from my journey. Be open to God's conversation – it will enter your life when you least expect it. Be open and ready.
