A friend recently asked me if I believed in spiritual beings. In response to my puzzled look, the question became much more direct. “Do you believe in good and evil, angels and devils, forces that impact your life and mine?”
It has been a long time since I have faced that question. I did not sense it came with an agenda. In fact, it seemed to be one of genuine curiosity. Did I believe that God was real and engaged in your life and mine?
I tried to make sure my answer was clear. “I would love to know why you are asking. Candidly, my answer may lead you to conclude that I am nuts. Yes, I believe God is real. I see God interacting in the details of your life and mine. Right now, we are pawns in a universal struggle between good and evil. I believe God has an army of angels working to protect our lives and souls. They are in a great war against Evil. Evil also has his agents – demonic angels as well as those around us that have given up their freedom to Evil's dominion.”
There was a long pause. It seemed to go on for much longer than I was comfortable with. In the end, there was a quiet, almost whispered response. “I too believe.”
The heart of his question is one that you and I need to struggle with everyday. The reason is important, to both of our lives. God is actively working on a relationship with us. Divinity is trying to speak to us – through individuals, events, and on occasion directly. When I read how “an angel of God, as real as his next-door neighbor, came in and said, 'Cornelius.'” (Acts 10.3) I believe the voice was a tangible, audible, and coherent. Cornelius understood. In his case, he recognized and responded.
Today God will talk to you and me. I do not know if Divinity will reach out directly, it is possible. We are called to be open to the impossible. We are God's ambassadors.
