Falling business leaders does not come with the surprise that it used to. We always knew the individuals were human, filled with the usual weaknesses we all carry with us. Underestimating the competition, misjudging clients, and failing to see accurately into the future are failures are reasonably acceptable during good times. However, the recent failures are leading indicators that many leaders fail to have anyone holding them accountable. They seemed to have abandoned their conscience some time ago. Their confidents are not giving them what they need most; a real picture of what is going on around them and the potential consequences of their actions.
Everyone needs a compass in her/his life. We often have two. Even with these, I find myself failing to listen to either of them. The Spirit is whispering in your ear and mind. The Spirit’s motive is only for our good. Guidance, warning, and even correction are all part of the conversation. In addition, we have an ongoing opportunity to give others in our lives permission to be a voice of accountability. They can advocate when we need a champion. More importantly, they can warn and correct when we drift.
We live in a dangerous time. In our freedom, we have the opportunity to listen to the voices God places in our lives. At times, our lives will mirror an old king. “Things went from bad to worse for Herod. Now people from Tyre and Sidon put him on the warpath. But they got Blastus, King Herod's right-hand man, to put in a good word for them and got a delegation together to iron things out.” (Acts 12.20) The question Herod wrestled with was what to do with the results. He needed guidance, warning, and correction.
Today’s dawn is filled with storm clouds. They are reminders of the priorities that come with each day. The Spirit offers to sit with us and set our course. God’s voice comes through family and friends, offering hope and advice. An ongoing dialogue with God is the only way we can make a difference.
