When answers are on the table, I find myself relaxing, thinking that I do not need to think. The temptation to stay in this comfortable position is always here. Those that are selling their ideas are striving to convince. When you or I accept, their view wins. The dynamic applies to every situation. I hear the imaginary conversation unfolding.
“Come on in. Let’s discuss the future.”
“Thank-you.”
“One small request.”
“Sure, anything.”
“Leave your mind at the door.”
I know this conversation only exists in my mind, yet it seems as though everyone is asking me to do this. The themes are here. In broad strokes, the message includes the following. Embrace the change. We know what is needed. The change is political, financial, and social. Do not worry. We will take care of things.
In between the lines, do not think, do not question, and most importantly, forget disagreeing with the proposed direction.
The invitation to just go along without thinking is not new. Employees assume their managers want them to follow their instructions precisely. Many think that one needs to check one’s mind at the door in order to walk into a Christian church. Others suggest that getting along is the best indication that a community is going in the right direction.
There are situations were taking instruction is critical. It is important to know the difference between this type of instruction and a recommendation from someone guiding our course. In my experience, God provides warnings that are critical to our survival. In addition, God offers us a guiding Spirit. The latter is an invitation that requires thought, reflection, and intellect.
There are examples of others working with the Spirit. Even leaders responding to the Spirit’s call, Barnabas and Saul for example, decided to take “John along to help out as needed.” (Acts 13.5) It was their decision in how to best respond to the invitation.
Today, you and I will see opportunities to make a difference. God’s voice will deliver many of the invitations. Each invites us to think, consider, and possibly act.
