Honest conversation is not always easy, even when it is simply a personal preference. Candid dialogue can be dangerous, even if it is between friends that share a high level of trust. Trying to communicate, openly, does not always result in a positive outcome. Candor comes with risk and rewards.
Being aware of what can happen with candor can be step to a filtered conversation. In order to be effective, candor should travel with empathy, compassion, and courage. Even then, bad things can happen. Yet, the possibility of great things does make candor in the right situation worth the risk.
Several friends have given me a priceless gift. Their gift is an honest, candid, and open conversation. A discussion about getting together for dinner reminded me how unusual this gift is. I thought my plan for dinner was filled with great possibilities. A simple “I do not like that cuisine” gave me the opportunity to make new plans. I know the conversation was not important in the greater scheme of things, yet it is a clear reminder of opportunity we have with each other and our communities.
When someone said, “Dear brothers and sisters, children of Abraham, and friends of God, this message of salvation has been precisely targeted to you.” (Acts 13.26) We would do well to value the risk this person is taking in being open.
When someone gives us words of truth, even though it hurts, we have received a rare opportunity. With truth, we can make our lives a better place.
When someone asks us the tough questions, honestly challenging our approach and plans, we have been given something that many never receive. We can learn and grow in ways that are greater than our reflection.
Life is complex, challenging, and risky. Truth filled candor can make a difference. Listening is rarely easy. Embracing the insights that come is an opportunity with great rewards. Today is the beginning of such a time. God is talking to us through life’s ordinary events and the actions of those around us. God will be candid.
