All my investment training suggests that markets operate within a logical framework. One knows that perceptions and fears play a role, however intellect used to dominate in the end. Recent history suggests that fear plays a much larger role than I ever expected. Emotions are dominating logic and intellect. Perceptions are shaping facts. Rationale behavior seems to have taken a break.
If I could make the statement without commenting on myself, I would suggest that the markets are stupid. However, I keep finding myself behaving like everyone else. I take decisions without good reasons. I draw conclusions shaped by fear. I expect the impossible.
I find that I am in good company. Across history, there are examples of individuals and communities acting without rationale thought. For one man the results were devastating. In his community, “they couldn't find a good reason, but demanded that Pilate execute him anyway.” (Acts 13.28)
Today is our chance to break this cycle. Yesterday does not need repeating. The freedom that we have within gives us an opportunity to make something new. We may not completely change our approach, yet the following approach can help.
Stop acting blindly. Being intentional is always superior to a reactive response. The only way to change the present is to stop the idiocy of the past.
Understand one’s values and priorities. Knowing the heart of one’s soul is key to engaging in life. One must know what is inside in order to be true to one’s heart.
Be intentional. Act instead of react. Be aware and in the present instead of dwelling on the past or trembling towards the future.
I know that I will continue in my less-than-smart ways. I do know that I can change the equation. I can let Truth touch me from the inside, changing me in ways only It can. The process provides the opportunity to make a difference in my community while I am weak. Each act of compassion makes us stronger. Each gift of love changes the lives of at least two. Each moment is what we have.
