I love visiting and having visitors. As I mused over the recent experience of two politicians visiting each other, where one is lavish in his gifts while the other is careless, I find myself reflecting on my role with others. Am I gracious and kind? Do others really want me back? What did others take away from our encounter?
I would not want to be in the American politician’s shoes. Once it is real, one has no ability to unwind a statement or action. Even with the insight that comes from another’s response, one cannot change what is done. Statements made are one’s own, even when they are made in ignorance or carelessness.
I walk carry two take away reflections. Each interaction in our lives is a unique moment that requires our care and attention. Preparation helps. Awareness makes a difference. Knowing that we are telling another of the values that we hold closest to our hearts can be sobering. We do not need to fear. It is a story that continues with each moment. Though everyone benefits by the care and attention we show, each is an opportunity. The Spirit is willing to give us courage, hope, and the willingness to act even when we are hurting inside.
There is a second reflection. God is speaking to us in the ordinary events of life. We are encountering God’s voice and highest values in good times and bad, in moments of joy and extreme pain, and even in the mundane. When I noticed how others reacted, like “when the service was over, Paul and Barnabas were invited back to preach again the next Sabbath.” (Acts 13.42) I wonder if I have responded to God in this moment. Am I inviting God back? Do I even want the Presence in my life?
Guests are more than those that are in our lives on a temporary basis. Guests include everyone we invite into our hearts. God is willing to be a permanent guest in our lives. I want this reality; the opportunity begins in the moment at hand.
