We had never met physically. In my mind’s virtual image, made up of emails, phone-calls, and network intelligence, I thought I had a reasonable facsimile. Yet, I sensed he would be different than I expected. I did not know how or why, but virtual is never the same as reality. One can imagine, however the physical always fills in what we did not realize we missed.
Tim described himself as a man in jeans wearing a tweed jacket. Given the location in the train station we were targeting to meet, I did not hold out much hope in recognizing him in the crowd. As I showed up late, I gave up searching before I started and dialed his number. As we talked, he walked and I stood still. He knew I was in a black jacket and jeans. As he turned a corner I heard the magical words, I think I see you. I laughed and hung up wondering if I would spot him first. I never saw him until after he saw me.
A Wisdom Father reminds me how “God, who can't be fooled by any pretense on our part but always knows a person's thoughts, gave them the Holy Spirit exactly as he gave him to us.” (Acts 15.8) God knows your heart and mine. God sees what we are not willing to see ourselves. God ignores the external and looks to the real you and the real me.
Today dawns clear, bright, and filled with opportunities. I have no idea what will happen. I do know that God has already spotted me. God will deliver at least one miracle to your life and mine. I have already experienced several things unusual – each in its own way a miracle. I have seen kindness when it was unexpected. I have received gifts of service that I did not deserve. I stood on the site of a man’s death eighteen days ago, offering a prayer to mix and mingle with the impromptu memorial that still stands.
God wants to be more than something virtual. We decide.
