The tom-tom GPS in our rented Opel sedan lagged our precise location. Normally this did not present a problem. In the midst of multiple left right options and highways going north, south, east, and west on the edges of Milan, I knew I was in trouble. As I exited the tollbooth, the unit kept telling me to bear to the left. The sense of a disaster unfolding before my eyes was overwhelming! There was a small lane to my left. The size of the lane combined with the pebbles and dust on the lane screamed that this was a road less traveled. Everything except the GPS unit told me that it was the wrong way. In a moment of blindness, I followed the rented GPS unit.
The signs that appeared in the moments that followed confirmed my imagination. I was going the wrong direction.
In this moment, I discovered that the Open has an internal GPS unit. As I set the destination, our location moved into real-time. The instructions were precise, accurate, and timely. My confusion about when and where to turn vanished. The journey, for this stage and remainder of our adventure, worked without a hitch. There were a few wrong turns in the days to come. In each case, the GPS was accurate. Trust grew as the number of errors declined with each step.
I found myself reacting to the way God speaks in my life. As I listened to the Spirit’s voice within, I find myself seeing the referenced truth with new clarity. There is a consistency in the way truth unfolds in our lives. Wrong turns often seem wrong even before we make them. Errors are frequently uncomfortable choices. Being accountable for the choices we make is always important no matter who gives us the advice. God is never here to take away our freedom. God reminds us that new truth “is in perfect agreement with the words of the prophets: After this, I'm coming back; I'll rebuild David's ruined house;” (Acts 15.15, 16) you and me.
We are in God’s plan.
