I watch decisions being made every day. Some are sadly comic; doing an illegal u-turn in front of two policemen makes you wonder if there was any thought going on in the car. Others are perplexing; a tall SUV went through a new red light at almost twice the speed limit. I wondered what could be so important that the driver would risk his/her life and everyone at the intersection.
When the decision going against one’s plans, even if one understands, I find it extracts an emotional toll. In the context of today’s chaos, it is hard to imagine how we could ever agree. Yet, I know that others have been able to reach across the differences and unite. When I read how “everyone agreed: apostles, leaders, all the people,” (Acts 15.22) I know this was not a simple compromise. I understand that many present had examined values that they held close to their hearts. I imagine the wonder expressed by all present when the decision was taken. It was a miracle.
I cannot solve the issues communities are struggling with today. I do know I can make a difference in the choices I am a part of. My personal reminders include the following.
Every decision is a choice. You and I hold freedom within us. We decide. We choose. We have the ability and will ultimately accountable. The decision rests with you and I.
Great decisions often require even greater listening and reflection. Great decisions are rarely about analysis, decision trees, or propositions. Awesome choices involve listening to more than what one knows, reflecting on the truth and potential present.
Difficult decisions can pivot on truth and honesty. How honest are we willing to be with the pain and uncertainty in our lives? Will we be truthful with those around us? Are we willing to ask for help?
Today starts with unwritten stories. You and I will contribute to the next chapters of our communities as well as our journeys. Our decisions will mark our progress towards compassion, and making this world a better place.
