As I reflect on what it will take to realize a dream, people and images are the first things to come to my mind. In the front are three distinct alternatives. In one case, the individual looks through the door with curiosity and wonder. It is as if whatever is to be seen is slightly out of focus. While not sure, the belief is that the door will lead into a wonderful place of dreams and achievements.
Another individual is standing back from the door. The same door that that was a gateway to a dream is seen very differently. This view is filled with storms and uncertainty. The fact that it is open at all is a warning that should be cautiously explored. No decisions should be made. No inputs or counsel taken. With absolute conviction, fear prevails. There are reasons to be cautious. Reasonable people do not step out in this way. Moving forward is not advisable when under siege.
There is only one door.
The third individual is moves forward then back. The hesitation to step out is tangibly real. Others feel it. The body language of the image screams out in fear at the least provocation. Motivation speeches fall on dear ears. Coaching sessions are gratefully received and then laid aside. The door is an opportunity. The question is – is it one of success or failure?

I have no idea which image will win in the larger scheme of life. I do know that the “the person who wins out over the world’s ways is simply the one who believes Jesus is the Son of God.” (1 John 5.5) The winner will choose compassion. This embrace will include the idea that communities are more important than self. This embrace will tell a story of sacrifice and commitment to the greatest values we hold close to our hearts.
There is only one door. It lies in the moment at hand. In the present, we have freedom within us. With this, anything is possible. Every action/non-action is a choice.
