I am in a select group with the companies that I have worked with. The label describes us as “Insiders”. It is a legal definition that brings with it certain responsibilities, however it speaks of a broader perception by those who are on the outside. Those that are insiders “know” what they cannot.
It is an interesting label. With our recent earnings announcements, speculations on what is next, and our progress on we have announced, one might assume that I sit in on regular briefings. Quite to the contrary! I almost know what my group is doing. I have an idea what my peers are doing. I have almost no knowledge of what the greater group is doing beyond what I read in the press. Even as I begin to express my limitations, I realize that I know a lot more than I realize.
The reflective questioning was triggered by an old observation. In that case, one writer was describing his reaction to a series of events. Rather than comment directly on the specifics, he looked more broadly. “To us who are personally called by God himself—both Jews and Greeks—Christ is God’s ultimate miracle and wisdom all wrapped up in one.” (1 Corinthians 1.24)
In a work construct, I know and understand the group’s values. Not only do they make sense, I believe in them. I have been briefed on our core strategies and intent. Again, they resonate as ones that give us a competitive advantage as well as ones that we can deliver on. As things unfold, knowing these gives me insight as to what we will celebrate and where we will take action. Watching the story emerge reminds me of my insider perspective. I know a story that is much greater than my space.
It does not end here. You and I are insiders to a great mystery. We know that God loves us. We believe God is engaged in the details of life. This knowledge changes everything. We are insiders, partners with Divinity. It is an awesome place to be.
