Twelve years ago I started writing a daily thought for a friend. At the time I could sense that he was yearning to hear God’s voice. I thought if I could capture what God was saying to me, that it might be useful for him. As I look back, I realize that voice crying out for God was as much mine as his.
In the process of learning to listen to God’s voice, I have come to believe that every human longs to hear God voice in her/his life. My thirst is not unique. We all have it, even if we do not know it. With our biases and assumptions, we are on a quest. We search everywhere – in books, words, music, and even the dark corners of life. Most never find what they are looking for. They carry on, fearing what might happen if they stop.
I would like to suggest that we are looking for what we already have. God is alive in your life and mine. God is speaking, in the events and experiences of our lives. Divinity’s voice can be found in nature, random events, and even in those who are our enemies. I did not find God’s voice out there. Rather, I discovered that it is in life’s whispers that God voice is the loudest. My challenge is looking when I should be listening, seeking when I should be still.
Some have asked why I continue to write a daily thought. The answer is simple. I write to remind others and more importantly myself that God’s whispers are in your life and mine. I find myself attempting to echo Paul’s words. “All I’m doing right now, friends, is showing how these things pertain to Apollos and me so that you will learn restraint and not rush into making judgments without knowing all the facts. It’s important to look at things from God’s point of view.” (1 Corinthians 4.6a)
God is reaching out to you and me in every part of our lives. Divinity’s voice is here, if we want to hear.
