As the world cup unfolded, facts and figures emerged. As interested as I was in the subject, I readily admit that ICC’s Cricket World Cup is not on everyone’s mind. This is a sport that many in the world would not recognize although reports say that 68 million tuned it to see the final. Cricket trivia can be interesting however I doubt most would think it is important.
As the echo of laughter and celebration began to die down (my team won!), I found myself reflecting on facts and figures. What is trivia is important to someone. The fact that a player has performed for 21 years, scoring 100 or more runs on 99 occasions may not seem like a big deal to you, but it is for him. This is his life work. This is a unique accomplishment that we are unlikely to see again in our lifetimes.
What does one do with bits of information (trivia)? Let me suggest that following to myself as well as others.
Trivia can contain transformational gems. The odds are against you noting the one piece that is important. What one initially sees as trivia can actually be a fact or observation that is the missing puzzle piece in your life or mine.
Trivia is important to someone in some context. It may not be relevant to you at this moment, yet it can be for another. A trivia question emerged in one community. “The question keeps coming up regarding meat that has been offered up to an idol: Should you attend meals where such meat is served, or not?” (1 Corinthians 8.1) While the question is not one I worry about, responding with respect is a way of honoring the journey others are on.
Trivia can be fun. Enjoy it for what it is; a little know fact, figure, of piece of information. This comes with a warning. One can never forget a piece of trivia. It will grow with your mind when the time is right. Until then, listen, laugh, and celebrate. Enjoy the moment at hand.
