In the midst of sharing my views of recent history with a new colleague, a realization emerged that changed the tone of the conversation. This was not a conversation with two individuals expressing personal viewpoints. We were in a boat together. We would not always be where we were in the moment. While we were together, we had an opportunity to collaboratively work together.
It was an interesting turning point. In the days and conversations since I am reminded that you and I are in a boat together. Staying a point that I often forget, we are in this together. We may not see each other. We may not talk about it. However it does not change the fact! We are members of a family.
A related mantra comes in realizing that we are in this together. It is not enough to share with those around us. We would do well to listen with open hearts. In our conversations and experiences, Wisdom whispers. Wisdom reminds us of great truths. Wisdom speaks of opportunities and hope. Wisdom is here, often in places that we least expect it.
Paul reminds me that I often forget the center of what we know. “I’m staying alert and in top condition. I’m not going to get caught napping, telling everyone else all about it and then missing out myself.” (1 Corinthians 9.27)
Experience suggests that I tend to ignore the lessons others are learning. I think we are in different boats while ignoring reality.
As I think about the potential of working with my mates, I realize there is a fundamental question that I need to embrace. Am I in this alone or with others? Are we in a boat or am I alone on a raft?
Today I will have the opportunity to recognize the contributions of the team. It will be a time of celebration and remembering. It is also a reminder that we are in life together. Even as the battle looms, we are never an army of one. God is on our side and we have family.
