The sauna session was a vehicle for sharing ideas about potential business opportunities. It could have been Finland, Japan, Singapore or as it was in this case, California. Individuals seem to share universal themes of hope in the midst of adversity, wonder in the context of the routine, and knowing that answers are found in community.
I am not sure why I find it surprising. We have much more in common than we have differences. We thirst for a sense of belonging and purpose. We long to be in relationship(s). We struggle. Life reminds us through the wisdom of others that the life we live is linked to those around us. In the positive, we can make a difference to our communities. We can learn and grow. Even in the negative, we share a common reality. As a writer reminds us, “No test or temptation that comes your way is beyond the course of what others have had to face. All you need to remember is that God will never let you down; he’ll never let you be pushed past your limit; he’ll always be there to help you come through it.” (1 Corinthians 10.13)
In the heat, we wrestled with our views of the community we found ourselves in. It was a good exercise to do together. Each brought a perspective that improved our ability to see what might be possible. The questions we put on the table could be asked in any community one might find her/himself in. I found my heart renewed and hopeful. There are possibilities within our reach. They will require planning and aspirations. While nothing is guaranteed, the quest is worthy of our time and attention.
I have no idea if the specifics we discussed will take root. I know I see the future with hope because of their views and ideas. It is a wonderful gift. Their willingness to look at life and struggle together gives birth to an opportunity that only comes with community. Knowing that we walk together opens new windows. We can do more with others.
