As I sit looking in the morning light, looking north towards Malaysia, I am struck by the amount of green in the view. The trees of Demsey Hill and Embassy row along Tanglin, the botanical gardens, trees surrounding four reservoirs, and the Bukit Timah Hill create a natural contrast with the concrete one expects in this island city country. There is a blend of natural and created, dark colors and light, what provide a sustainable foundation to this city that is always reinventing itself.
I can see how the blends in life combine to offer more. Even my morning coffee reinforces this awareness. It is a blend of different Indonesians beans with two distinct styles of roasting.
Diversity with purpose always wins. The best of the old with the new offers renewed opportunities for hope.
It is easy to fall into a rut. Singular ideas worked so why not stick with them? Awareness born from great ideas offers a path so why not continue to go with those ideas? The answer often challenges me; there is more.
In all things, there is more. Physically, mentally, and spiritually, we have an opportunity to do and be more than we have. It is something I knew but seem to have forgotten. One writer observed that “the First Man was made out of earth, and people since then are earthy; the Second Man was made out of heaven, and people now can be heavenly.” (1 Corinthians 15.47, 48) I know this to be true. At the same time, I find myself wrestling with the answer to the question of reaching for more than I was.
I realize that if I want more, it will take yesterday, today, and hope to give me a picture of the possibilities. The blend of past, present, and future offers you and I more. We have the potential. We have the experiences. We have a Spirit willing to guide. The blend that opens a door to the bigger story and opportunity is in your life and mine. This foundation creates the opportunity within us.
