As I got out early on a Sunday morning, I was struck by the details in motion around me. The air was very quiet, heavy with the tropical morning dew that was intensified by the bright sunrise. There was a natural intensity to everything. I could see a man running with his dog, tongues hanging out as they pushed on to an unknown destination. There was a couple walking with a long stride, pushing on as if their lives depended on each step. Even the casual walkers pushing strollers carried themselves with purpose. I could smell the trees and in certain sections the flowers and shrubs. It was as if the world had woken up with an air of celebration.
It is easy to get caught up in the busyness of the day. Telephone calls, emails, errands, meetings, and the errant problem dominate ones view. Each brings a sense of immediacy. You know you must get the task done. The goal and timing is clear. Life is calling us into action.
On this Sunday morning I heard Life speaking with a different voice. It was time to reflect and appreciate what was in the moment that was here. There is a balance to our callings yet the choice of what we do is always within us. We decide what comes next. We pick our actions. Our freedom gives us the opportunity and accountability.
I have two suggestions, more to myself than anyone else.
First, take time to notice what is going on. Listen, watch, and reflect. Action from this foundation will move one towards living.
Second, celebrate. There is so much we have to be thankful for. Start with this and then move to action.
I listened and the words formed on my lips; “to him who can keep you on your feet, standing tall in his bright presence, fresh and celebrating—to our one God, our only Savior, through Jesus Christ, our Master, be glory, majesty, strength, and rule before all time, and now, and to the end of all time. Yes.” (Jude 1.24, 25)
