Singapore dawn usually comes with a bright sun, blue skies, and a tranquil quietness. It does not usually last long – haze from neighboring countries, cars clearing out their exhaust pipes, and nearby construction combine to remind one that it is a city with several neighbors living with their demons. As I think of the nights where the windows have been lashed by tropical storms, today’s quiet beginning stands out in stark contrast.
The tranquility reminds me that Hope is always close by. Even in the middle of a storm, one can remain confident that the turmoil will not last. Whatever the pain is in your life or mine, it will ease. As dire as circumstances might seen, we can act to make a positive difference.
I find myself fighting the darkness by holding onto the idea that anything can be better. As the sun rises, I am reminded that the storms of yesterday are past, my cries have been heard; “Get out of here, you Devil’s crew: at last God has heard my sobs.” (Psalm 6.8)
As time passes, the relentless of a new day emerges, consuming any darkness that remains. There is work to be done, opportunities to be seized. Each moment is singular in its appearance – ignoring it hurts you and me more than it does anyone else. The call is be present, ready to act, willing to accept the help of others, and engaged in life, open to all. Yet, some excuse themselves. I do not want to be part of this response. The freedom within us, guarantees that we have an ability to choose our destiny.
The question sitting with us is one of choice. What will we choose, today? Is there a course of action, now? As murky as the future can be, the questions that remain with us are often quite simple. Will we strive to make a positive difference? Are our actions intentional? Will we act?
Today’s sunrise will quickly give way to the hustle of the day. We have an invitation to be part of making it better.
