The best make it look easy. A pass in football, American or English, with a ball flying 50 plus yards to a man on the run lands perfectly in stride – right on the foot, softly in the hands – happens with a “nice” comment. We expect this! We think this is normal. It looks easy until one tries to do it.
As I think about it, in every sport and situation in life, the best make it look easy. Yesterday I watched an Aussie football player kick the equivalent of a field goal on the run from close to 50 yards out. It was an amazing feat of athleticism. Commentators and fans alike were in awe, but the game moved on and it was not mentioned again. It looked so natural and easy.
As I begin a new day, my mind is replaying images and stories of great men and women I have had the good fortune to meet and in many cases work with. In every case, they made what they did look easy. As I reflectively look deeper there is a common trait that each shared. While they were doing the big stuff, they were also paying attention to the details. Nothing was lost or wasted. In business, one had to know one’s numbers and the events that led up to them. If solving problems, one thought of how to build a repeatable process to that it solved the immediate and the future.
I realize the God I know and love fits the same pattern. David description is perfect; “His purpose titanic, his verdicts oceanic. Yet in his largeness nothing gets lost; Not a man, not a mouse, slips through the cracks.” (Psalm 36.6) This is a God that makes the business of living love look easy.
In every moment of inspiration I know that the process of following is always difficult. Taking something that one can see and folding it into one’s life so that it is natural requires patience and perseverance. It is a worthy pursuit that demands we bring out our best.
