Yesterday the news covered two people that had just past. One was a punk rocker that influenced a generation. The second was a 14-year old boy with a curiosity and love of life that could not stand up to a storm with hurricane force winds. Any death is a loss. When it occurs to a young person, it is especially painful.
Both leave us with unique legacies. I am struck by the contrast. For one, songs, lyrics, albums, and extreme behavior dominate. Drugs, escape, and things that were wrong dominated what others saw of his journey. His view on life captured the chaos of his generation in New York City. Whatever one might say, for or against, I see an authenticity coming through that is always hard for others to accept. Drugs, alternative lifestyle, and the struggle to be part of something bigger than one’s self are part of the themes of struggle every generation wrestles with. He was not unique except for his ability to give voice to the struggles that are common to every member of the family.
In the other, I cannot imagine the pain and anguish that is overwhelming the family that knew and loved this young boy. So much of life was in front of him, waiting to be experienced, touched, and influenced. He had a unique personality. He had already touched others. His potential for making a difference was unlimited. So much was unwritten, waiting to be experienced.
A God promise that many hold onto includes the following; “I’ll make you famous for generations; you’ll be the talk of the town for a long, long time.” (Psalm 45.17) As a storm lashes the windows, I realize it is hard to hold onto the promise when life seems unfair and cuts things short. The day’s reminders include the following.

Live life to the full. The opportunity is in the moment that we have right now. Our time is now.
Our legacies will last as long as someone remembers. To those left behind, never forget the gifts others have left for us.
