In an age where we are buried by data, information, and images, it is hard to imagine what stands out before it stands out. As I consider different techniques and processes to get an idea noticed, there are a bewildering list of books, articles, techniques, tools, and alternatives that one can consider. Knowing which one is the right one to choose is a problematic decision at best.
Over the past few days I have been struck that there are several examples where I noticed something in the chaos and clutter of an otherwise normal day. In each case there was a something that each shared with the others.
Natural beauty is wonderfully inspiring; a sunset, the contrast in the sky as a rainstorm danced as it approached, and the beautiful trees and flowers lining the road as I rode east on a sunny afternoon. There were no human efforts to get me to notice, but I did. Nothing demanded that I pay attention to the experience, but I did.
Compassion is compelling; a quick apology when something went wrong, unconditional kindness offered to one that did not deserve it, and an embrace when words would have be inadequate. There were no scripts for the individuals involved to follow. Nobody was advertising or trying to derive benefit from the action. As I watched and experienced the incidents, each moment had my full attention.
Selflessness is tangible. When one is selfless, others feel and sense the moment. Compassion can be part of this however selflessness goes far beyond one action’s in response to others. A selfless action, especially a proactive one taken because it is the right thing to do for the community, is a powerful statement. It is a public statement of values. It is a living example of priorities. Each is a priceless gift from an individual to those within her/his sphere of touch and influence.
Attention will follow when it is compelling. David observation stands true; “The whole country will see how you [Beauty/Compassion/Love] work, all the godless nations see how you save.” (Psalm 67.2)
