As I watched individuals on the days that followed a big celebration, I found myself lost in the chaos of emotions, memories, and reactions. There was a wonderful minority revelling with the discovery of discovered friendships. One wanted to celebrate with them, embracing the potential of possibilities and hope that were taking shape through words and actions.
In contrast, there was the discovery of broken promises, often bizarrely timed to perfection with the silence that always follows empty words and the legacy of actions intended to mislead from the beginning. I always find it hard to watch. You can see the pain that smolders like a fire struggling to grow. As long as there is fuel and heat, things could explode without warning. Listening to the expressions of anger, I hear a recurring paraphrase of David’s words; “You walked off and left us, and never looked back. God, how could you do that? We’re your very own sheep; how can you stomp off in anger?” (Psalm 74.1)
In every encounter there is a possibility that it is a step to more. Regardless of the length of the journey that proceeded this moment, there is also the possibility of this being the last. As a reminder to the possibility of both directions, I would offer the following observations.
Presume the best but avoid assuming. It is possible to offer everyone a clean opportunity. At the same time, let actions, intent, and motivations reveal the true heart.
Always remember that everyone is human. They come with strengths as well as weaknesses. They are wrestling with opportunities as well as threats. As strong and capable as s/he might appear, each has experienced a dark night, wrestling with fears, uncertainties, and other demons.
Journeys and friendships take time. As much as one might know in a moment, faith and trust only come with experience. The gifts of time and patience can help create bonds that endure and support one in times of uncertainty and stress.
I do not know the future. I am willing to explore while carrying hope-filled dreams.
