The remnants of a spectacular car crash at over 200 mph are for sale. A local website where the wreck occurred has listed the item along with a picture of what is left. From the video of the wreck it is hard to imagine anyone surviving, yet two did. From the picture of what is left, it is hard to imagine that there is anything of value. I wonder, is there?
Disasters have a way of destroying the physical as well as the mental. In this case, there is little left of the exotic sports car. The fire that followed the wreck consumed the body. The tires are mere shreds of what they were. If I looked at the picture without knowing what it was, other than a wrecked and burned car, I would be hard pressed to guess what kind of car it was. With the physical essentially gone, hope seems to have left as well. There are rumors that a single brake rotor is for sale from the wreck. Is there more? Could something come from this disaster?
I have heard the last question linger after disaster left their mark on institutions, buildings, and individuals. The premise is that without the physically things of value, there is no hope for the future. Nothing can be done. It would be fruitless to try. The message one holds is simple; write it off, let it go, move on.
As I reflect on the state of the car, I find my mind drifting to other disasters and reactions to it. From the cynicism to statements of fact, the message is ugly. Write it off, move on to “they burned your holy place to the ground, violated the place of worship.” (Psalm 74.7) In both, one struggles to hear that Hope is anywhere nearby.
Today I find myself looking at the resurrection of a soul. Divinity’s handiwork is alive, transformed from the inside out! Everything began with belief in the possible. God believed then and still believes. Our embrace of God’s belief in us always leads to resurrection.
