I like being an optimist. I believe from my heart outwards in hope and a sense of wonder and possibilities. I am also a pragmatic realist. I know others do not always see life as I do. While respecting our different views, I believe Hope is something universally good. Everyone is better because with Hope in their lives; life is richer and more fulfilling. I have witnessed Hope gives birth to courage and strength.
I also know there is a force that is out to destroy Hope. I look around me, wanting to scream at Hope; “They’re plotting to do your people in, conspiring to rob you of your precious ones.” (Psalm 83.3) Even as I do, I realize Hope knows Evil by many names. Hope is determined to stand firm and tall wherever Evil is. In the midst of the battle I hear Hope calling out encouragement to you and me.
Embracing Hope with everything we have is the best defense against Evil and its allies. This is not a casual embrace. This is an embrace that determines whether we live or die, thrive and merely fade from view. We cannot let go, even for a moment. It is in the embrace that we find purpose, courage, and the energy we need to continue.
We are called to stand tall with Hope. Hope is looking for allies. We are invited to be complicit as advocates for a better future, more possibilities, and opportunities for all. We are called to extend our arms, embracing the powerless, undeserving, and destitute. Standing is never passive. It is an act of intentional choice.
Sadly, we are caught in a battle. At times, Hope seems to be absent without leave. Experience reminds me that Hope is as alive as I am willing to believe. In the darkest moments, I have seen Hope emerge. In the bloodiest battle, when everything seems lost, Hope appears battered but still strong. We are invited into a sweet embrace with her that changes everything. My advice is to hold on tight, it is our lifeline.
