Expertise and wisdom have several things in common. Each can come from any source at any time and in any context. Each is grounded in truth that have stood the test of time. When one realizes that s/he is connecting with either, a sense of euphoria, elation, and peace often follows.
I was reminded this morning in a two-line email, of the hope, energy, and courage that comes when one connects with a source of expertise and wisdom. My immediate reaction was an adaptation of a psalm; “Royal splendor radiates from him, a powerful beauty sets him apart.” (Psalm 96.6) As I thought more about it, I realizes there were several lessons that I could take with me as I ventured out today.
Being on the looking out for expertise and wisdom is a starting point for every day and the conversations and encounters that will follow. Everyone has her/his unique limitations. Limitations include one’s ability to see, understand, or do any and every thing. It could be a narrow specific or a broad generality. In all cases, the expertise and wisdom found in others enriches and strengthens our lives! We can be better, do more, and live richer because of the Other.
Sources can be many and varied. From the glimpse of something beautiful to the words of another’s hand, young and old, rich and poor, educated or simply connected with living, everyone has something to share. As important as openness is, it is also good to test and consider. We are never asked to blindly follow. We were gifted with minds and freedom. The connection defines our responsibility and accountability.
Expertise and wisdom are virtually worthless unless each is put into action. I find that as one puts each into use, it will grow and expand. Our embrace gives birth to a wave that will touch others in unintentional ways.
As I think of the best sources, I realizes that the individuals carrying each freely shared. The giants among them shared what they could unconditionally. Each gift is a call to action.
