There is a group chat that I participate in that always surprises me. At random times, without warning or reference, someone reaches out and cheers everyone else in the group on. Sometimes it is a humorous observation. On other occasions it is a politically incorrect comment. There is even the fun good morning, good night, or miss you comment. While I do not always reply, I do read, find myself smiling, and on more than one occasion, catch myself laughing in a setting that everyone is looking at me as if I am slightly crazy.
Cheerleaders are now on my hero list. They refocus my attention, redirect my thoughts, and infuse me with a sense of optimism and hope. When I think of the individuals in this chat group, I find myself looking at cheerleaders differently than I did before the chat began.
Anyone can be a cheerleader! In good situations as well as painful, chaotic, and uncertain ones, cheerleaders can take a stand. It is especially impressive when you realize that you are in a better position to cheer, yet the one that is least able is stepping up.
Cheerleading is about invitations, excitement, and hope. As I watch the individuals and the outcomes that follow, especially within myself, I realize that this is not a role that one is entitled to, qualified for, or is mandatory. Anyone can take it on! Regardless of everything else that is going on, the opportunity to cheer others on is there. When you do, everyone wins.
Opportunities to cheer get better when others participate. When more and more cheer, wow, the excitement builds! Past and present, the psalmist call reflects the chat I am privileged to be in! “So, God’s people, shout praise to God, give thanks to our Holy God!” (Psalm 97.12)
Life is a sweeter when I check in, ask questions, and participate with the group. Even as I think about it I wonder what everyone is up to today. I know everything is going to be a bit better with these guys. Thank-you to everyone.
