Traffic in India seems to have no rules. Even with several safe but horn filled rides behind me, I am not 100% sure my assumption is true. Yes, it is incredibly chaotic! Yes, there are vehicles and people everywhere. However, with careful observation I would suggest the possibility that there are understood rules of the survival and get to my destination game played by pedestrians, cars and busses.
Rule #1 – big objects at relatively high speed cannot stop quickly. If you want to live without accident, then avoid, dodge, and run! Move as if your very life depends on it. Frankly, it does.
Rule #2 – each and everyone’s number one responsibility is her/himself. One needs to ensure that s/he is safe. Although it can seem counterintuitive, taking care of one’s self does not mean putting others in danger. One can do both! The rule reminds us that one needs to take care of one’s self first in order to be in a position to help others.
Rule #3 – safety comes in many forms. One should not predetermine what is safe or not. One should accept safe havens when they are available.
Rule #4 – do not look for rules that fit your assumptions, biases, and expectations. The rules of the road are what they are. Bringing rules to the streets, especially one’s mind and imagination, will not help you get from A to B.
Rule #5 – engage! Yes, the streets are dangerous and chaotic. It is true that there are no guarantees. No promises are going to protect you! Having said all this, if one wants to live, one will need to dive in. The trials and challenges will make you stronger. Remember, “God rules. On your toes, everybody! He rules from his angel throne – take notice!” (Psalm 99.1) We are invited, called, and expected to dive in, take risks, and make a difference.
I think about yesterday’s observations as I look out on a new morning and Marine Drive. The streets are beginning to get busy. It is time to embrace the chance to live.
