Today is a day of remembering. Dominated by the past and the contributions of others, I find myself focusing on what is on the table to do. I know that whatever I accomplish today, there will be multiple to-do items sitting out in the open, waiting for my attention. I want to ignore and dismiss some of the items on the list, however I know the vetted list deserves my time and attention.
Having an overwhelming list of to-do is not unusual, especially for anyone involved in starting a business. Inevitably, one realizes that s/he has too many responsibilities and points of accountability, but given the economics of the situation there is little choice. If there are multiple opportunities the challenge grows to the point that it is difficult to see the whole picture at any point in time. Reminders that I find myself holding onto include the following.
Being transparently honest with one’s self is required if one is to achieve one’s aspirations. It is too easy to ignore reality and deceive yourself. The result is always squandered time, lost opportunities, and a need to explain or apologize.
Let others know what you are facing and be willing to accept help. Even simple tasks can be shared and supported. Complex ones often become less so when seen through the wisdom filled eyes of a friend. There are more helping hands and ears than we recognize. Letting others into our lives is a way of recognizing and stepping into the larger story of our lives.
Always hold onto hope. As dark and uncertain as the present may seem, you and I have the freedom within us to make it better. Others are working to help us – from the promises of Divinity (“When he attends to the prayer of the wretched. He won’t dismiss their prayer.” (Psalm 102.17)) to the loving care of friends far and near. Life in the present is defined by how we respond to the freedom we have.
It is easy to forget given life’s chaos and minute. Today I choose to remember.
