As the guest singer stood to take his place, I could sense that this performance was going to be different. In hindsight, I am still searching for the indicator that gave me this impression. I have visualized his stance, facial expression, and demeanor to no avail. I have asked the signer directly if he knew this performance would be different. He says that he had premonition that it would be anything other than a normal experience for everyone, himself included. He realized later that it felt different, but had no idea why.
Even now, I close my eyes and feel the shiver running down my spine. The moment in song was more than just a little different, it was a lot different! Nothing seem to be between the singer’s heart and the listening soul. One knew it was unusual, even in the moment.
As I look back, I am surprised and encouraged by what I saw.
There were no filters for the giver or those that received. Everyone experienced the fullness of what was shared. A routine song was anything but! Lessons that have stayed with me include the following.
When one gives freely and unconditionally, everyone can have an opportunity to see, taste, hear, and experience. Regardless of where one is coming from, from those in the know to those experiencing the moment for the first time, the potential is there. It was as if an old promise was metaphorically being fulfilled; “All the wild animals now drink their fill; wild donkeys quench their thirst.” (Psalm 104.11)
Special moments are often a surprise to each and all. In this case, both sides were awed by what unfolded. It was as if the shared openness by everyone present created a window for the magic that followed.
Letting others touch our lives can be risky, but, when one does and the moment is honored, so much can and in this case did happen.
I have no idea when next special moment will occur. I do know I want to be open and unfiltered. So much is possible.
