There are moments in life that catch anyone by surprise. When I look back on mine, I can see small flags that could be leading indicators. At the time, without an open mind and wild imagination, I did not anticipate the experiences that followed.
One experience was as simple as a bite during a meal at a randomly chosen restaurant. When we arrived, I was pleasantly surprised. The building shared entrances to a hotel and a hospital. The corridor where the restaurant was located also had an art gallery. Later, as I looked at the art on display in more detail, I realized that the art was on par with what I had just eaten. Who would anticipate that an incredible, overwhelm the senses in all the best kind of ways, wow this is amazing, extraordinary bite of food would come in this place that had been chosen because of convenience and location as much as it had by the reviews?
Another was the sense of hope and possibilities as I watched a four-year-old boy play with his older sister at an adult barbeque. At the time, they were the only children. Rather than complain or sulk, the two go on at making the experience an adventure! As I watched the care each showed to the other, it was as if I was infusing hope. Their natural laughter as they played gave me the sense that anything is possible.
The scene towards sunset and dusk reminded me of contrasting colors, textures, and emotions. The normal sharp golds and reds was replaced by soft colors that were offset by dark grey clouds that were more visible than tangible. The air was almost still. With the city coming alive at night, the mix soothed my soul. It was as if peace was possible even with the visible differences on display.
Life if full of surprises. Today I caught a glimpse and came away renewed. “What a wildly wonderful world, God! You made it all, with Wisdom at your side, made earth overflow with your wonderful creations.” (Psalm 104.24)
