I listened to the update with curiosity. The primary proposal was to go with a tried and tested solution. As the details unfolded, it was clear that everyone understood the business model. Even more, it seemed as if everyone knew how to describe the functionality of the website and proposition. For many, the clear vision, goal, and solution was a perfect combination.
I remained silent. The quietness of my emotions caused the story teller to pause and ask me for my thoughts. I struggled, hesitating to express a contrarian view.
“Has this solution every work? Do we have or know of any situations where deploying this answer resulted in the outcomes we are looking for?”
“No.”
“I wonder why we think it is going to be different now.”
The conversation still replays in my mind. When there is an opportunity, do we answer with what we did yesterday expecting that somehow things will be different this time? If so, why?
I do not know what decisions will follow. Perhaps there is too much momentum in play for things to change. I do wonder if I am willing to look at the evidence that is on the table. Will I seek to understand beauty and happiness? The rhetorical observations continue. “Out at sea you saw God in action, saw his breathtaking ways with the ocean.” (Psalm 107.24) Will I let the evidence of wonder and awe wash over me?
In today’s age, we are awash in evidence. In the midst of manufactured and manipulated data, images, and experiences, we are faced with sights and experiences of nature’s beauty, gifts of love, and compassionate acts in the community. My heart reminds me that each is a proof statement of Hope.
In a time of uncertainty, I pray that I will always look to Hope, Beauty, and Love. Each empowers me to make a difference. In my willingness to see and experience each moment with truth and wonder, I find an opportunity to embrace an invitation to continue building a better world in the present and for the future.
