There are two areas of my life that have unique path into the future. Both are filled with potential upside opportunities. The challenge with each is similar. I cannot walk the path and realize the potential opportunity in either without the help and support of others. Clients, support teams, and colleagues are as or more important than I am! The challenge that I am facing in each is similar. As much as everyone knows and understand the mutual dependency, the prevailing attitude seems to be an expectation of results without having to contribute with any thoughts or work.
I wish that the sentiments were isolated ones. If only it came down to one or two missing pieces within one project or development phase. As I look across the initiatives, cultures, and functions that touch my life, it is far more common than not. Worse yet, when I look in the mirror, I see much of the same in my life and actions! As much as I want to deny the reality of the experience, I find myself staring at the person with the same frustrations that I vent on others. Collaboration is more than working together. It is the ability to act independently, knowing and trusting the other will do her or his part. It starts with our action and finds it completeness in the action of others.
The greatest gifts with can give each other is hope, trust, and patience. Without these, acts that hold one accountable, attempt to motivate, or express the urgency rarely achieve the results we are looking for
At times, sacrificing for another is the best way to reach one’s aspirations. Remember the larger story, look beyond one’s self and see the potential within everyone.
