It would be interesting to explore the potential correlation between one’s personality and profile and where one spends one’s free time. If not where, then what one is doing.
One would need to be willing to look beyond the obvious. Spending time with friends, transcends location and type of venue. Hiding is expressed by many different forms of distance –being in point a versus point b, creating space between two individuals, or dramatically reducing the conversation and communication between two sharing the same space.
One can consider the possibilities that where one spends as a measure of correlation or as a place where one feeds one’s heart and mind. Experience reminds me that it is both. First, I choose where and when I will experience life that I learn from. Secondly, it is also the place that often is closest to what I have and am becoming.
The risk when others analyze me is the reaction the follows. Frequently in my case, another’s conclusion is met with different expressions of fear, uncertainty, and doubt. I fear you are right; therefore, I challenge the accuracy of your conclusion. I am uncertain of the intent; so, I debate the context of the analysis and its applicability to me. I doubt the integrity of motive, turning what could be helpful to me into an attack on the other.
The irony is the correlation is looking to those I admire. Where do they spend their time and how? When I find an individual of compassion and care, do I look to see where s/he is most of the time? Have I considered the activities they find enjoyable? Can I listen before talking?
There are individuals in life I admire. On examination, the psalmist’s observation rings true; “Judah became holy land for him, Israel the place of holy rule.” (Psalm 114.2) In each case, s/he has embraced the best life offers. They restore and energize their hearts and minds, sharing it when and where needed. With a thankful heart, I know each is an example I can learn and grow from.
