Experience suggests that the idea that great business leaders know exactly where s/he is going to end up is a myth. It is something many suggest is true however I have yet to find a great leader suggesting that s/he is one of the believers. Quite the opposite. The emphasis from great leaders is on the present and the next step s/he intends to take.
I still hear voices talking of certainty. Each is confident that there is a single path to the end. There is a trendy, adapt the latest idea with passion, way to responding to the challenge that gives many the idea that everything is under control and the destination is sure. I have not found Life to be predictable, simple, or easy to predict.
Almost is the background, forgotten by many, are the individuals that inspire me to look and reach to things better. If I was to build a composite of the attributes they share, it would include the following.
Rarely do they know the destination but they are absolute on what the next steps will include. From walking in the English midlands to chasing light on the South Island of New Zealand, each has a unique view of life and living. What binds them together is a quest to pursue beauty, experience wonder, and embrace the art of living. Each is an example of the psalmist’s observation; “You’re blessed when you follow his directions, doing your best to find him.” (Psalm 119.2)
The paths taken are varied and twisted. One could focus in on the pain, anguish, and uncertainty in their lives. Evil has not ignored them; from my observation that scars and lingering wounds are still visible. Yet, each chooses to embrace beauty and explore the possibilities of what might be. Learning, listening, and living are close friends in their lives.
Their lives convey a “why” to live. I am inspired by anyone living life in full, compassionate, and caring ways. By their example I see and imagine more than I ever thought possible. I have a chosen path.
