“We can do more with what we already have,” is a statement and premise that I find to be consistently true. As a community, we can do more with what we already have. As individuals – in our work as well as our personal lives – we can do more. While we look to something new to help us in taking the steps towards our dreams, we could get there with what we have. The greatest and most powerful asset we have is within us, our hearts and minds. Observations that I find myself returning to examine again and again include the following.
Every individual knows more than s/he think s/he does. Be it forgetfulness or simply the lack of a reflective search, our hearts, minds, and souls are filled with knowledge, wisdom, and insight. When the natural reaction tells ourselves and others that we do not know, my go to response is to challenge myself. Really, are you sure? If so, why? If there is a thread of doubt, let the quest begin.
Our resources and choices are greater than we ever imagine. When I reach for my glasses in the morning, it is as if I also put on blinders to possibilities, alternatives, and sources of help. When the road seems to reach a dead end, pause, and challenge the belief. Do accept the first or even the second “no”. Look, seek, and imagine the possibilities.
Use what works. It is always good to be open for more, but ignoring what is within our reach is foolish and more! We know the benefits of healthful living, yet I often choose something different. I admit there is a path of healing and restoration even as my recovery is in the red and yellow more days than not.
The reminder from the psalmist is direct and to the point; “You, God, prescribed the right way to live; now you expect us to live it.” (Psalm 119.4) It is our responsibility to live. We are accountable for the lives we live. We have the tools and help we need.
