Young founders believe s/he can make the world a better place. I have confidence any and everyone has the potential to do just that! Having said this, it is critically important to understand one’s place. Arrogance or foolish ignorance has destroyed so many good ideas!
My response as I find myself listening to different pitches has changed with time. It is easy to tell someone that they are not going to make it! Often, the evidence is overwhelming. It is hard, much harder, to find the gem in their words while sharing an honest perspective on where they stand. Along the way, I would share the following as a reminder to myself.
Listen to the story. Far too often, I am so certain of where I am that I forget how I got to the present. The journey with its context and nuances creates perspective. Retracing my steps often allows me to see things with different eyes. Knowing one survives, creates a unique reflective window where brutal honesty comes with no downside.
Candor is a strength which can be frightening in the present. Looking back, I have an opportunity to see my vulnerabilities and how close I was to disaster. I love moments when I echo the psalmist; “God, I’m not trying to rule the roost, I don’t want to be king of the mountain. I haven’t meddled where I have no business or fantasized grandiose plans.” (Psalm 131.1) It is this reflection that I know I need the help which is available to all.
In asking questions and hearing the story, insights emerge which often lead to a new story. As one founder expressed his surprise at my insight and wisdom, I enjoyed reminding him I was merely retelling the story he had just shared. The strength of his proposition was always there. It had been hiding in his story, eagerly waiting for someone, anyone willing to hear.
So much is possible when one is grounded with the right foundation. My role in taking founders to their foundations has encouraged me to rediscover my own.
