There are two reference points for where I live in the map apps I use on my mobile. In one, using the regular name of the building, the address shows on the backside street of the building. While directionally accurate, and useful if one was walking, it is not particularly helpful if one is trying to arrive at the front entrance by car. If, on the other hand, you add a district to the building name, the starting and ending point will be the front door.
Starting and end points are essential if one is to be successful in getting from point A to B. I realize it may seem obvious however, recent conversations reaffirm a familiar reminder to always know one’s starting and ending points. It can be as simple as reaffirming the details, in my case checking precisely where I am relative to the building. Related reminders include the following.
If one is not sure that one’s start or end point is accurate, ask. Confidence will not help if one is ignorant. Taking time to ask and reaffirm the details with someone who has more insight, experience, or knowledge is a useful investment. If there is a difference of view, see understanding and maybe even a second opinion.
Knowing where one is or where one needs to be is never complete. Again, it may be obvious to some. The frequency of map corrections as I leave the front gate suggest that I often forget. When I am connected at the start, the phone takes care of the corrections for me. If I am unconnected or it is a destination, a good outcome is an unlikely event.
The process of checkpoints and checklists in my life is to help me with every journey. Discussions, collaborative working, and even help requests all have starting and end points. My reminder to myself is, “know them!”
In context of my where and how, someone onside always helps. “Keep up your reputation, God – give me life! In your justice, get me out of this trouble!” (Psalm 143.11).
