The Emirates often host individuals who one easily recognizes as serious VIPs (very important persons). Between the entourage of men in big bulky dark suits, heavy black SUVs, and escort cars with flashing lights, and the confidence in which the occupants walk into a venue, one knows that each believes s/he is important. With all the flash and dash accompanying them, one might presume these individuals live pampered lives, free of the emotional dramas and strains we face daily.
As I reflect on the headlines of recent months, I am struck by the universal nature of pain, the unbiased nature of tragedy, and the courage to stand up against it all by those one might think too weak to survive.
Life can be short, equally for the rich and famous as those struggling to get through the day. A father or mother’s loss of a child knows no race, economic standing, or status. The lasting impact on one’s life transcends everything else, leaving one rattling around in a shell that is far less than it was. Treasure each day, every conversation. Each is a gift of love.
Fear has many faces and yet at its core it touches our souls with the same brush. As I think of the individuals I meet, each recognizes the fear in their life even with the differing guises and manifestations. There are few places where one can go where fear is not present. For me, a retreat into a sacred place is always a place of safety. I may not understand each faith system. In the experience of being in a place of refuge, I always find sacred gold.
Relationships convey love and belonging to the rich and the poor, the strong and the weak. When embraced, “earth’s kings and all races, leaders and important people” (Psalm 148.11) celebrate and enjoy life’s best along with the women and men of all walks of life. Each standing equal in the Divine family.
At times, one forgets s/he is a VIP, at least to those who matter. Come, now is the time.
