Several times a week I have a remote eLearning class. I was not forced to take it. It was and is 100% my choice to sign-up and attend. In general, I really enjoy this class. There is one unusual aspect to it. The course is offered by a university in the United States central time zone. Class is scheduled three times a week, sometimes four, from 5.30 to 7.00 in the evening. For me, this translates to a 2.30 to 4.00 am, wake up, be present, and participate decision.
During my first of three semesters, my sleep and recovery rate given the class schedule was all over the place. Most days, even with after-class sleep and naps, I was constantly exhausted. Something began to change towards the end of the semester. Given that the change has been consistent during the beginning weeks of semester two, I realise that my sleeping rhythms are in harmony with my schedule. High recovery rates, far fewer down days, and no missed classes this semester is the new norm.
As I reflect on what has changed, there are several initial lessons.
I let life set a rhythmic pattern. I shifted my primary role to living with the pattern, not trying to determine what it should be. In this experience, old words are clear; “We’ve finally figured it out. Our lives get in step with God and all others by letting him set the pace, not by proudly or anxiously trying to run the parade.” (Romans 3.28)
Every pattern comes with an opportunity for one to make a difference and grow in the process. The individuals in this class have enriched my life in ways that few are aware of. Our interactions are, to my surprise, teaching moments. It is not that we always agree. For me, the key has been rediscovered in our dialogue. Everyone involved appears to be listening to understand, patient, and curious.
The experience is opening a door to a richer life where I am challenged. Every moment comes with an invitation to be fully present and engaged.
