The idea and examples of harmony have dominated my reflections. Awareness of individuals working for the greater good while facing conflicts and challenges at hand. I see those pushing for what is needed even though it means less for them. Examples of knowing who is on side, working with them for the greater good, are all around me. As the day starts, the image that came to mind was a shared dessert at the end of an amazing lunch. I do not know why we shared the dessert. I do know there were four of us, laughing, enjoying the moment, and living in harmony in a way that still informs me today.
Harmony begins in knowing. We may not completely understand the details. However, when I am in harmony, I can feel it, I can sense its presence, and in mysterious ways I struggle to describe, I know. It is as if the tie that binds us dominates my way of thinking, feeling, and being. In context, I understand what Paul was reminding me of; “Now that we are set right with God by means of this sacrificial death, the consummate blood sacrifice, there is no longer a question of being at odds with God in any way.” (Romans 5.9)
Harmony is forward-looking. Harmony is all about the present moment. Past differences, experiences when I disagreed, and even moments of tension build a foundation of knowing how strong the harmony is. As we shared the dessert, I was certain that this moment marked a change in the collective as well as bilateral relationships at the table. We had not changed our past, we had focused on our future. We were not ignoring our differences; we had found something greater that we all agreed on. I felt as if I had learned from our shared experiences and embraced a way of growing together. The laughter, joy, and community were tell-tales of a better future and celebration of the moment.
Harmony is a good friend of unconditional love. It confirms and strengthens. It also fills me with courage.
