As the waiter filled my glass with water, I found myself caught in a moment of silence. My mind was totally focused on the water and light. The rest of my senses joined, tunnelling in so that there was a single vision in my thoughts and reflection. Between the colours, reflections, and the way everything worked with the other, life began to share her observations.
In clarity is a new creation. One might not think light could be focused, sharpened, and shaped by passing through a clear glass of water, and yet, as I considered the scene this was my starting point. The table setting was filled with soft light, soothing colour, and rounded edges. It lulled my senses, creating a sense of comfort and ease that welcomed me to food, service, and entertainment. Amid this scene, a symbol of recreated light was shining on the tablecloth.
Water transforms anything that passes through. Cleaning, hydration, and life are often connected with water. It is an essential essence of living. One faith system puts it this way; “When we are lowered into the water, it is like the burial of Jesus; when we are raised up out of the water, it is like the resurrection of Jesus.” (Romans 6.4) Metaphorically, water plays an important role in restoration, cleansing, and rebirth in many others. From the connection with foot washing and prayer to the holiness represented in the water as it is applied to our bodies, to the flow out to any who would partake, water changes everything it touches.
Never underestimate its power. There is a gentle quietness in a glass of water. On this evening, it was hard to imagine raging rivers, tsunamis destroying coastal buildings and everything that is there, or cutting stones. Yet, water is the common denominator that carries the force, does the heavy lifting, and cuts through the impossible.
Water is symbolic, transformative, and a force beyond our imagination. As I listened and accepted the whispers, I could sense the transformation within. Today is my opportunity for care, compassion, and community.
