I know summer is on the way. The cool misty mornings of winter have given way to sunny still mornings that start at 27C (84F). Everything points to hot summer days where one is happy if the heat only gets to 45C (113F). Being alert and ready is a challenge that most will solve by staying indoors.
For many, staying indoors is not an option. Work is calling. Appointments need to be kept. There are errands to run. One community provides a shelter. The air-conditioned bus-stop waiting areas are a mini-oasis of rest that allows the traveler to be alert and ready.
As I look at today’s heat ahead, I wonder if there are any respites I can use to stay alert, ready. Today’s whispers are pointing me towards the reliefs that are within reach.
Take each step with Hope. Experience reminds me that Hope infuses one with energy and courage. Each protects one from life’s hot spots. Hope is, for me, grounded in experience. I have seen kindness, intentional expressions of Hope. I know it changes everything. I have experienced care, Hope’s relationship glue. With Hope embracing my soul, wrapping itself around my heart, I am prepared for what will come.
Be alert, be ready. Ignoring the signs will not change today’s realities. If one finds oneself out in the open, exposed to the elements, find shelter. Even as I write, I can sense the preparation underway within me. This is not about trying to change the battles ahead. The preparation within is a response to a calling to engage, caring to make a difference.
Be patient. As hot as it can get, life is greater than the moment at hand. Pain never stays as long as one believes it will in the moment. There are options, even when it feels like there are none. Remember the promise; “Stay alert like this, and before you know it the God of peace will come down on Satan with both feet, stomping him into the dirt. Enjoy the best of Jesus!” (Romans 16.20)
Alert, ready, go.
