The waiter directed me to a table he had chosen at random. My target was a relatively quiet spot, so the conversation that followed would be comfortable and easy for everyone. Next to the window, it was as good as we were going to get. The number at the table told me I had reached out to the best. I reflect on the table, designations, and dialogue, letting life share my lessons for today.
The number 23 has come to represent the greatest basketball player of all time. It is easy to get lost in his “wow” moments. The number on the table reminded me of those highlights as well as his less-noticed role as a team player, his sacrifices for the game and others, and his commitment to defence.
Number 23 was committed to winning every facet of the game. We saw the ball going through the net and points on the board, yet the story was told with each step along the way. Today is not just about the results. Life is found in each choice. When decisions align, great things happen. The story can get lost. It is found in this moment and the next. A writer noted, “While he lived on earth, anticipating death, Jesus cried out in pain and wept in sorrow as he offered up priestly prayers to God. Because he honored God, God answered him.” (Hebrews 5.7)
Greatness is more than a number. Greatness is found in the sweat and toil. It is told by the man in the arena. Every moment lived as if it were the last. Decisions are made knowing one’s life depends on it. Life’s intensity does not need to overwhelm. Intensity can be consumed as restoring energy for one’s heart and soul. We are players in the game! We can make a difference. It will be hard. It will be a battle. It is also our time to play a role in the bigger story of kindness and care.
Behind every symbol is a human being. Today is my opportunity to tell my story.
